The National Institute on Aging, working under U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, in its Alzheimer’s disease fact sheet has revealed that as many as 5 million Americans age 65 and older may have Alzheimer’s disease- a disease whose most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events.
Though it is not known that how many of celebrities, politicians, bureaucrats and other public figures are included in these five million Americans but a few examples from American way politics will let us understand that how deep rooted is the Alzheimer’s disease in the USA.
President Obama remarks about Christianity at the prayer breakfast have irritated some republications. Former governor of Virginia Jim Gilmore called the remarks of Obama the most offensive from any president of the United States. Jim Gilmore said, “He has offended every believing Christian in the United States”.
Jim Gilmore is 66 years old, member of Republican Party of USA and hints at presidential run in 2016. I don’t assert that Mr. Jim Gilmore is suffering from Alzheimer but the fact is that he has forgotten that his fellow former Republican president George W. Bush has also offended every believing Muslim all over the world when he used the word ‘crusade’ on the day of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Secondly if the remarks of president Obama has offended the ‘every believing Christian’ then why Mr. Jim Gilmore is excluding the Christians of other Western countries from this offence.
President Obama while giving these remarks about Christianity tried to compare the ISIS recent cruelty of beheading and burning the captives with the cruelties of Christian fundamentalists in the past. However president Obama too forgot to mention that present fundamentalist and fanatic approach in the Muslim World is the gift of American policies to confine Communism in the East. Mrs. Hilary Clinton remarks about the American policy of leaving Afghan Mujahadeen on their own after USSR withdrawal clearly indicate that the present wave of extremism is the outcome of American vested interests in the Muslim World.
One of the symptoms of Alzheimer is that the patient is confused. The White House spokesperson has recently revealed that Taliban are not terrorists but rather an armed insurgency. Looking back into the past we see that in 2001 USA attacked Afghanistan to dismantle Al-Qaida and to remove the Taliban from power. All this was carried out under the banner of legislation of 14 September, 2011 – The Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). Section 2 of AUMF states “That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks”. This clause of the legislation does not in any way suggest that Taliban are not terrorists.
The Alzheimer’s disease of Americans has destroyed the region. When US announced to withdraw from Iraq then it was followed by the emergence of IS. Similarly the rise of Taliban was the outcome of American negligence of Afghan issue after American supported Jihad in Afghanistan. Most of the prisoners released from Guantanamo joined the ranks of terrorists again became the leaders of higher cadres.
The symptoms of Alzheimer in American attitude towards peace in the world will lead to the decline of American hegemony in the world affairs. Paul E. Vallely (Retd) Major General, US Army in his article ‘the chessboard is changing’ states “Do we in fact, have any competent senior government officials or are the only amateurs handling foreign relations and our national security? Maybe many of our old allies have lost confidence in us as a leader in the world. The international chessboard is changing and not changing for the good of America”.
USA will have to change its way of politics to gain the support of its old allies. The recent tilt of Pakistan towards Russia is the outcome of US dual standards of politics. Similarly Afghan Taliban first opened their office in Qatar but now its inclination towards China for arbitration between and Afghan government is another setback to American policies in the region. Germany and France leadership met with president Putin for the solution of Ukrainian issue is in one way the victory of Mr. Putin. Although Iranian officials were smiling during the meeting on nuclear issue but the fact is that Iran is successful in explaining to the world to accept its leadership in the Gulf region.
USA is now bound to stick to the rules of international politics otherwise the multipolar world is not a dream anymore.
